Mary Jo Matsumoto is an artist living in Southern California. With an MFA in filmmaking, her initial focus was directing and storytelling, the influence of which can be seen in her paintings. Her work revolves around the intimate and meditative experience of the natural world and how we find our place in the liminal moments of an eroding environment. She works with oil paint and uses a variety of techniques that include wax, sgriffito, as well as old master glazing techniques, creating many layers of a painting which she will sand back and paint over repeatedly to create a sense of underlying quiet movement.
